Just arrived in Montreal after a long day of driving in rain and, after dark, fog. We stopped in Mahwah, NJ and had lunch at the Istanbul Restaurant, which was very delicious (manti and yogurt kebabs, with eggplant salad and labneh with walnuts, Turkish tea), then headed north with a few other stops along the way. Why do I always crave vegetables when I get home from a trip? When we're away, I always feel like I've eaten way more white bread and protein (in the form of meat and cheese) than I want to, and way fewer veggies, salads, and fruit than we do at home, even though I always pack some to take with us. So right now, even though it's after 10:00 pm, I've got carrots simmering on the stove for some late-night carrot-and-red-lentil soup, and then will fall into bed.

Welcome home!

nothing beats a tasty homemade soup but I am longing for some Middle Eastern dishes right now!

Carrot and red lentil soup sounds delicious, Beth. Glad you made the trip safely.

I too crave vegetables when I get back from a trip. And I think it is a lot to do with the vegetable starvation that a trip entails [I find myself grabbing quick sandwiches in lieu of meals, especially in large cities with lots to do/see and lots of people to meet up with]. The red lentil soup...a perfect solution! I'll keep that in mind.
The photo and poem are lovely. Especially for sound and evocativeness.
