This beautiful work of art, combined with your wise and poignant words: sublime and powerful.

Thank you very much, Edward, my friend.

I also received this comment from a longtime reader via email before I opened comments on this post:

Thank you for your thoughts today with links to resources, especially "They Were Only Children" and this from Rabbi Rachel Barenblat's post:

"The current reality, in the streets of a land our tradition deems holy, necessitates a spiritual crisis. A spiritual crisis requires more than prayer. It requires heartbreak, which demands reflection, which then demands action."

which led to this:

There is heartbreak and hope and there is love in action. Your voice for peace is heard.

Beth, sorry for my late response. I love love love this painting and also what you wrote. . As you know, I share your feelings about about the ongoing tragic situation and I would have joined the recent huge demonstrations in London (and elsewhere) in support of Palestine but I'm not up to it at present and it's still quite risky (despite all the vaccinations) to be in crowds. I'm in touch via email with an English woman who lives in Jerusalem and things are very bad there - will probably get even worse as the right wing PM in the new coalition is even worse than Netanyahu.
For those who want to know about the history of the conflict, here's a summary:

Who was Cassandra?

  • In the Iliad, she is described as the loveliest of the daughters of Priam (King of Troy), and gifted with prophecy. The god Apollo loved her, but she spurned him. As a punishment, he decreed that no one would ever believe her. So when she told her fellow Trojans that the Greeks were hiding inside the wooden horse...well, you know what happened.
